Inspection of large forgings and castings for steam and gas turbine sets

The safe operation and high availability of turbine systems place high demands on the reliability—and thus on the quality—of the components used. The experience gained in the manufacture of large castings and forgings has been incorporated into this VGB standard and is intended to help increase the operational safety and availability of turbine systems.

Essentially, the following content has been revised:

• Adapting the testing specifications to current requirements
• Revision of the cited standards
• Updates to the available literature
• The procedure for performing ultrasonic testing on forged shafts has been clarified
• Elimination of the edge bars

This standard is intended to facilitate cooperation among the parties involved. Its application, whether in full or in part, must be agreed upon between the client (AG) and the contractor (AN).

Requests for changes from turbine set manufacturers have necessitated a revision of the 2013 version. For example, the topic “Ultrasonic testing of turbine shafts” was revised jointly.
