Non-destructive testing (NDT) plays a crucial role in various industries in ensuring the safe execution of many safety-critical processes. However, the testing process itself also involves uncertainties, as the actual test results are subject to noise caused by various factors. Reliability assessment methods are used to estimate these factors and the total number of uncertainties. Some of these methods are already required by various guidelines. However, these guidelines are often component- or industry-specific. To develop a universally applicable method, the normPOD project—funded by WIPANO under the title “Standardization for the Probabilistic Assessment of Reliability for Non-Destructive Testing Methods” (project number 03TN0006A)—was carried out.
Within the project, a methodology was developed that makes it possible to establish a quantifiable evaluation metric for testing methods across different industrial sectors and for different components.
